Peter Sharp demonstrates exercises to help straighten the upper back.

Full Video Transcript

Hi, my name is Peter Sharp from St Leonards Physiotherapy. And this is another video of exercises for golf in our series.

What we’re looking at today is trying to straighten up your upper back. So a lot of people, a lot of golfers, in particular, are quite flexed in their upper back, all right? And, you know, spend a lot of time bending forwards and so that upper back gets quite flexed. When your back is flexed, it’s very hard to get enough of that shoulder turn. So the straighter you can get the upper back, the easier it is for you to get the shoulder turn that you need to be able to hit the golf ball properly, all right?

So what we’re trying to do is straighten up that upper back, and the easiest way of doing that is using the roller, a foam roller. So what you wanna do is just lie on the floor and put the roller in between your shoulder blades, hands behind the back of your head, lift your hips up, and you’re just rolling up and down trying to stretch over the roller. And really trying to loosen up the muscles and joints in your middle back so that you can stand with your upper back in a straighter position.

Once you’ve done that, then you should be able to feel like you can stand up, and stand and sort of straighten that upper back a little bit better. Thank you.
